Ingredients

For the Rice Krispie Treats
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 package marshmallows (10 oz)
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
For Decorating
  • 1 cup candy melts (any color, for dipping)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening (optional, for thinning candy melts)
  • Assorted Halloween sprinkles
  • Assorted candy eyes

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • Large saucepan
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the Rice Krispies cereal and stir until well combined and coated with the marshmallow mixture.
  4. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan using a spatula or your hands (lightly greased). Let it cool for about 15-20 minutes.
  5. Once cooled, cut the Rice Krispie treats into squares or desired shapes.
  6. Melt the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl according to package directions, adding vegetable shortening if needed to thin the mixture. Dip each Rice Krispie treat into the melted candy, letting excess drip off.
  7. Immediately add sprinkles and candy eyes to the wet candy coating before it sets. Place the decorated treats on parchment paper to dry completely.

Notes

You can use different colors of candy melts to create various monster looks. Feel free to add food coloring to the melted marshmallows before mixing with cereal for colored treats.
