Method
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a baking dish.
- To caramelize the onions, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 25-30 minutes, or until the onions are soft, deeply golden brown, and sweet. Remove from heat.
- While the onions are caramelizing, prepare the butter mixture. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Slice the dinner rolls horizontally, keeping them connected if possible. If they are individual rolls, arrange them in the baking dish.
- Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the bottom half of the rolls. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese over the onions.
- Place the top half of the rolls over the cheese. Brush the tops of the rolls generously with the prepared butter mixture.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the tops of the rolls are golden brown.
- Let the sliders rest for a few minutes before pulling them apart and serving.
Notes
You can add a thin slice of ham or turkey to each slider before adding the onions and cheese for a heartier option.
