Method
- Rinse the black eyed peas and soak them overnight in water. Drain before using.
- Add the soaked black eyed peas, water, ham hock or smoked turkey leg, onion, garlic, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using) to the crock pot.
- Cover and cook on low for 6 hours, or until the peas are tender.
- Remove the ham hock or turkey leg, shred the meat, and return it to the pot. Stir well before serving.
