Ingredients
  

For the Black Eyed Peas
  • 1 lb dried black eyed peas rinsed and drained
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 ham hock or smoked turkey leg
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes optional

Method
 

  1. Rinse the black eyed peas under cold water and drain.
  2. Place the peas, water, ham hock or turkey leg, onion, garlic, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using) in the crock pot.
  3. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6-8 hours, until the peas are tender.
  4. Remove the ham hock or turkey leg, shred the meat, and return it to the pot.
  5. Stir well and adjust seasoning if needed before serving.
