Apple Crisp with Oat Topping

Ingredients
  

For the Filling
  • 6 medium apples such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
For the Topping
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cut into small pieces

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the rolled oats, 1/2 cup flour, brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Mix well.
  5. Add the cold butter pieces to the oat mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry blender to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  7. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  8. Let the apple crisp cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. It is delicious served warm, perhaps with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

You can adjust the amount of sugar and cinnamon to your preference. If your apples are very tart, you may want to add a little more sugar to the filling.
