Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound of ground beef (lean or regular)
  • 1 cup of beef broth or water
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil (optional, for browning)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: diced onion, minced garlic, your favorite seasonings

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ground Beef: Open your package of ground beef. Break it into smaller chunks, especially if using frozen ground beef.
  2. Brown the Ground Beef (Optional): Turn on the Instant Pot and select the “Sauté” function. Add olive oil to the pot. Once the oil is hot, add the ground beef and break it apart with a spoon. Brown the beef for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it’s no longer pink.
  3. Add Aromatics and Seasonings: If desired, add diced onion and minced garlic to the browned ground beef. Sauté for another 2-3 minutes until the onions are translucent and the garlic is fragrant. Season with salt, pepper, and any other spices you enjoy.
  4. Pressure Cook the Ground Beef: Pour beef broth or water over the ground beef, ensuring there’s enough liquid to create steam. Close the Instant Pot lid and seal the valve. Select the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” function and set the timer for 8 minutes for fresh ground beef or 12 minutes for frozen ground beef. Once the cooking cycle is complete, allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes, then perform a quick release to vent any remaining pressure.
  5. Shredding and Draining: After releasing the pressure, open the Instant Pot and use a spoon or spatula to break apart the ground beef into smaller pieces. If there is excess liquid, drain it using a colander. Be careful, as the liquid will be hot.

Notes

  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pot: Cook in batches if you have a large amount of ground beef to ensure even cooking.
  • Deglaze the Pot: After browning, pour in the beef broth and scrape the bottom of the pot to loosen any stuck-on bits, preventing a burn notice.
  • Adjust Seasonings: Taste the ground beef after cooking and adjust the seasonings as needed.
  • Storage: Store cooked ground beef in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.
